Summer Essentials 2017

Now that we’re in the midst of summer, I thought I’d take a moment and share a few of my favorite summer products at the moment. From makeup to skincare, these easy-to-find drugstore products will spiff up your everyday look effortlessly.

1. Infinite Lip Cloud Long-Wearing Lip Creme

When I think of summer, I think of vibrant, cheery colors. That’s why I’m glad to find the perfect orange lip color to brighten up my makeup look. The Infinite Lip Cloud lip creme from EM Cosmetics was just what I was looking for: matte yet bold, and quite long-lasting. Not to mention the beautiful shade called Faded Clementine. It’s like a subdued, summery orange; not too bright, not too dark.

What I love the most about the color is how well it suited my skin. I usually have trouble wearing bright-colored lips as the colors stand out too much on my tanner skin. I’m not fond of my lips looking awfully bright in stark contrast to my skin tone. Yet with Faded Clementine, I can enjoy wearing a bright, summery color since it actually looks pleasant.

I bought the Infinite Lip Cloud lip creme for $16, which is more than I would normally pay for a lip color. However, I heard enough good things about it that I figured I should give it a go. Plus, it gave me a chance to order from EM Cosmetics for the first time.

2. Beautifully Bare Cheeky Glow by e.l.f. Cosmetics

Speaking of bright colors, I now adore this pretty blush from e.l.f. Cosmetics. Beautifully Bare Cheeky Glow is a wonderful blush that I wish I had discovered sooner. As with the Infinite Lip Cloud, the name says it all. With this blush, you’ll get a lightweight blush that you can easily build up. And, even though it’s lightweight, the Bare Cheeky Glow gives you a gorgeous finish that makes you look like you’re glowing from within.

I’m all for natural makeup looks, and even more so now that it’s summer. I prefer to keep my everyday makeup as minimal as possible, and this blush helps immensely. In fact, you can swipe a bit of this on your cheeks without any foundation and you’ll get a lovely pink glow.

After all, if you’re like me, you’d probably prefer to run errands or even go to work with a near bare face when it’s 90 degrees out, rather than sweat off all your hard work. If you’re still not convinced, just go try this blush for yourself – it’s only $4 and you’re sure to love it.

3. Plumpify blastPRO Mascara by Covergirl®

Plumpify blastPRO Mascara by Covergirl

Now, I will admit that this isn’t one of my favorite mascaras, but I think it does a good job considering what I want for the summer. Like I said, I want to go out as barefaced as possible in the summer – including going easy on the eyes. Eyeliner makes my eyes stand out more, but considering how easily I get warm and sweat, not to mention my naturally oily eyelids, it’s not really worth putting time into eyeliner every morning. So, I thought a cheap mascara that did a decent job of making my lashes stand out would make up for my lack of eyeliner.

The Plumpify blastPRO Mascara by Covergirl does just that. Again, it’s nowhere near the perfect, go-to mascara, but I like that it volumizes, or “plumpifies,” my lashes without making them look heavy. You get a bit of lash lengthening, too. Plumpify blastPRO fans out our lashes with one coat, and then thickens them with several more coats. A pretty simple way to make your eyes stand out without having to apply more eye product. However, as with many volumizing mascaras, be wary of overapplying lest you want horrid clumps and spidery lashes.

4. Neutrogena® Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry Skin

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry Skin

I have been using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry Skin moisturizer for a while, and I’m so glad I took the chance to try it when I did. This moisturizer feels great when applied, and instantly absorbs into your skin. What’s more, it’s a non-comedogenic moisturizer, which is perfect for anyone with problematic skin like me. One wrong product can cause my sensitive skin to react, usually with cystic acne. I’ve learned to avoid products that go all over my face that aren’t non-comedogenic, since they’ve always given me breakouts.

Anyways, this moisturizer is perfect for summer since it’s not heavy. Usually I need thicker moisturizer to combat the dryness of my combination skin, but this particular one is designed for dry skin. And it definitely does the job: being lightweight and water-based makes it go on smoothly with immediate results. My skin instantly feels hydrated, which is what I need before taking on a hot, dry day here in SoCal.

5. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera might just be the nectar of the gods. But really, is there anything aloe vera can’t do? From lightening blemishes to improving digestion, the benefits of aloe vera seem endless. It’s particularly helpful during the summer as it can take care of dried out skin and sunburns. Try to get as much “real” aloe vera as you can get; in other words, the most natural aloe vera. The bottle I have here is from a local market, and it’s got 99% of slimy yet soothing aloe vera in it.

That’s it for my current summer favorites! These products are quite easy to find and pretty affordable, so give them a try if you’re looking for convenient, everyday summer makeup and skincare.
